United Nations Target Gender Equality

OTarget Gender Equality is a gender equality accelerator programme for participating companies of the UN Global Compact. Through facilitated performance analysis, capacity building workshops, peer-to-peer learning and multi-stakeholder dialogue at the country-level, Target Gender Equality will support companies engaged with the UN Global Compact in setting and reaching ambitious corporate targets for women’s representation and leadership, starting with the Board and Executive Management levels.

Companies participating in Target Gender Equality have the opportunity to deepen implementation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles and strengthen their contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 5.5, which calls for equal women representation, participation and leadership in business globally.

Portuguese Charter for Diversity

NOS subscribed to the Portuguese Charter for Diversity, an initiative of the European Commission that consists of a document signed voluntarily by employers from various sectors (public, private, for-profit and non-profit) and which describes concrete measures that can be taken to promote diversity and equal opportunities at work regardless of cultural, ethnic and social origin, sexual orientation, gender, age, physical characteristics, personal style and religion.

The Portuguese Charter for Diversity is in line with the efforts undertaken by the European Commission and with the priorities of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

Lisbon European Green Capital 2020 Commitment

In 2020 Lisbon is European Green Capital. This distinction aims to recognize the transformation of the city in the last decade and renew the commitment to achieve a better urban environment by 2030. Based on this ambition, the municipality launched the challenge to the city, to companies, organizations, associations and institutions, public and private, to subscribe to the Lisbon European Green Capital 2020 Commitment - Climatic Action Lisbon 2030, with an ambitious agenda for the next 10 years.

NOS joined the Lisbon City Hall and signed the Commitment, with 14 proposals involving specific actions on several fronts, such as circular economy, mobility, energy, awareness and mobilization.

BCSD – Business Council for Sustainable Development

NOS is a signatory to the Charter of Principles of the BCSD Portugal, a document that sets out the principles that provide guidelines for good business management. The Charter of Principles aims to create a voluntary framework suitable for companies of various sizes, in order to encourage the growth of sustainable management practices, based on six principles: (1) Legal compliance and Ethical conduct, (2) Human rights, (3) Working rights, (4) Prevention, health and safety, (5) Environment and (6) Management.

The inspiration for the Charter of Principles of the BCSD Portugal comes from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work of the International Labor Organization and the United Nations Global Compact.

United Nations Global Compact

The United Nations Global Compact is an initiative in corporate citizenship founded on ten key Principles in the areas of human rights, labor practices, environmental protection and anti-corruption, and aims at encouraging a public and voluntary commitment by companies to adhere to them.

Its ten principles are based on universally accepted declarations, namely the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Declaration of the International Labor Organization in relation to Fundamental Principles and Rights at work, and the Rio Declaration on the Environment and Development.

NOS signed up to this initiative in 2014, and this year it also became a member of the Global Compact Network Portugal (UN GCNP), the network that brings together the signatories to the initiative that operate in Portugal.
